Shmee150 visits AutoXotica
It’s not every day that you get to meet a bona fide YouTube star. But in November, the AutoXotica team enjoyed that very honour when supercar vlogger Tim Burton, a.k.a Shmee150, popped by our Donington Park HQ for a little back-to-back supercar showdown.
Over the past eight years, the ever polite Shmee has made a name for himself creating engaging supercar content using his signature video selfie technique. He now boasts a legion of worldwide fans all eager to see what automotive adventures he gets up to next. From car rallies and epic road trips to exclusive supercar shoots further afield, Shmee has done it all.
Undoubtedly, we couldn’t wait to see what Shmee would make of our very own supercar club and, more importantly, what he thought about our fleet. To give Shmee a better understanding of what AutoXotica membership is all about, we set up the perfect driving experience especially for him.
The Supercar Showdown
On the day, Shmee took part in a back-to-back showdown of four of the world’s greatest supercars. On trial were the Ferrari 488 Spider, the McLaren 570S, the Lamborghini Huràcan Spyder, and finally the Porsche 911 GT3.
Shmee would drive each supercar on a stretch of open road around the club to see how they stack up against one another. As Shmee himself admitted, this back-to-back experience would give him a unique opportunity to really get to grips with each supercar’s idiosyncrasies all on the same road conditions making for a more accurate comparison.
With the Leicestershire weather in fine blue-sky form, the convertible tops came down and all that was left to do was wait with bated breath for Shmee’s ultimate verdict. Which supercar would reign supreme?
Ferrari 488 Spider - The Italian Stallion
To kick start the day, Shmee fired up our twin turbo charged Ferrari 488 Spider in signature rosso corsa. From the get-go Shmee was impressed by the 488’s playful sport mode characteristics, noting how quickly you get through the 8000 rpm rev range. With carbon fibre extended pedals that are very sensitive to the driver’s input and actions, the 488 delivers a visceral drive that is all about immediacy, precision and, as we’ve come to expect from the prancing stallion, unbridled power. Switching the Ferrari manettino into race mode really unleashes that engine roar and allows for quicker shifts. The wide grin of Shmee’s face as he hit that last stretch of road says it all. Needless to say, the benchmark was already high.
McLaren 570S - The British Contender
Next up was the McLaren 570S in bright, carrot orange. Thanks to its carbon fibre tub, this dual clutch McLaren is incredibly light with plenty of power. Following his spin in the Ferrari, Shmee was struck by how stiffer the McLaren chassis is, making it feel more planted on the road. The Formula 1 inspired steering wheel also allows for a tighter, more controlled driving experience that gives the driver more instantaneous feedback. While it doesn’t come with as much drama as one might expect from a supercar, the 570S does feel more usable and road-friendly. That’s not to say the McLaren is tame. Not by a long shot. Flick the handling to track mode and the driver is treated to a surprising blast of speed that really shows off this marque’s racing credentials.
Lamborghini Huracan Spyder - The Raging Bull
Even before he slipped into the hexagonal-patterned, green-stitched interior, Shmee was quick to label the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder as “the noisy one of the bunch.” And with good reason. The cold start instantly reveals the LP 610-4 to be loud, raw and aggressive. However, to begin with Shmee was left feeling quite unimpressed with the Huracan’s twitchy throttle pedal and the lack of response from the steering wheel, especially when compared to the McLaren’s tighter performance. Where the Lambo does excel however is in its sense of occasion. The crackles and gun-shot noises as you push the naturally aspirated V10 engine harder is what the Huracan is all about. This is an exotic car that’s rebellious, boisterous and cheeky. And that’s before switching to corsa mode, which lets loose a reserve of pure rocket speed. By the time Shmee pulled back into the AutoXotica garage, the Huracan Spyder had left the supercar vlogger feeling rather torn.
Porsche 911 GT3 - German Precision
While the Porsche 911 GT3 may be the least powerful of the four, Porsche are well known for delivering precision supercars that pack a mighty punch. Shmee himself owned a 991.2 generation GT3 himself, and as such was more familiar with the ins and outs of the Porsche driving experience. Even so, it’s hard not to be enchanted by the glorious, spine-tingling noises as you rev up this naturally aspirated flat-six engine, no matter how familiar one is with it. As Shmee put it, the GT3 really is a “thoroughbred track car that is road legalised.” Due to its pristine German precision, the GT3 perhaps lacks those foibles that give supercars their sense of character. But even so, it’s hard to argue with the GT3’s swift, nimble performance out on the open road.

By the end of the day, Shmee gave AutoXotica a big thumbs up. The vlogger made special note of what a unique opportunity the club offers car enthusiasts in allowing them to test-drive different supercar models back to back.
